I will be having sub next week, so asked me to do a detailed outline for her to follow while she observed on Wednesday. Thought it would be beneficial to post.
Q is for…
Welcome Song
Welcome all to storytime
We will sing and we will rhyme.
Read a book and then we’ll play
Time for storytime, hip, hip, hurray!
Now we’ll sing our ABCs
We’ll do them all just wait and see.
A, B, C, D…. [point to letter with pointer while we sing]
Now I’ve sung my ABCs
Let’s start storytime, yes siree!
Henrietta’s Basket: Quilt
[Clues to guess, first clue is always “the letter of the day”]
Other words that start with Q [Give clues to the Q words, then hold up word strips as they guess it.]
Teach the letter in sign language
Song: Be my echo (tune: Are you sleeping?)
Be my echo (be my echo)
Q says /q/ (Q says /q/) [hold hand to sign the letter]
Quickly and Quiet[hold up word strips—doesn’t matter what order]
Quarter and Question mark
/q/, /q/, /q/ (/q/, /q/, /q/) [hold hand to sign the letter]
Flannel Board: Five Queens
There were 5 queens on a quest
To see who was the very best!
The first queen went to take a test.
The second queen said, “I’ll go out west.”
The third queen climbed Mount Everest.
The fourth queen made a beautiful vest.
The fifth queen said, “I’ll just take a rest.”
Book: Quiet Bunny (McCue)
Stand-up Song: 5 little ducks
5 little ducks went out to play
Over the hills and far away
When the mother duck said,
"Quack, quack, quack, quack"
Four little ducks came waddling back.
continue counting down
...no little ducks came waddling back.
But when the daddy duck said,
"QUACK, QUACK, QUACK!"
5 little ducks came waddling back!
Rhyme Time Song:
I’m so happy that you’ve come to storytime
Now listen very carefully to my rhyme
Stand up straight, and stomp your feet
Clap twice and take your seat
We’ll begin when I ring……
The rhyme chime….
[Say the nursery rhyme aloud after ringing the bell]
Nursery Rhyme: Jack be nimble
[Turn the easel around and point to the words while you repeat the rhyme again. Talk about the pictures and any words they may not be familiar with. Repeat the rhyme pointing to the words (if it’s a harder rhyme), the last time say “Grown-ups soft, kids loud”—point to the words as you help them repeat the rhyme]
