D is for Dog

This was my last afternoon/Golden Sower storytime for now...the attendance has been very small.  I hope to try it again if there is an interest and a need.

The Golden Sower book is "Help Me, Mr. Mutt: Expert Answers for Dogs with People Problems" by Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel

Additional books I have ready to use (depending on the age and interest level of children that come)

G is for...

Welcome Song

Henrietta’s Basket: gorilla

Song: Be my echo (6 syllables x 2) goose and glove; grandpa and girl

Sign Language: Letter G

Flannel Board: G-R-E-E-N
(tune: Bingo)

I take some yellow, I take some blue
I mix them together to get something new
G-R-E-E-N, G-R-E-E-N
G-R-E-E-N, G-R-E-E-N
And green is that color

I make these cards to hang from the flannel board for songs that go with the tune Bingo.  A trick I learned from a preschool teacher...on the back of the card put a picture of clapping hands, then talk to the children about how many times you'll clap before each verse.

Nursery Rhyme: Little Bo Peep

Book: Bubble gum, bubble gum (Wheeler)

Stand-up Song: My Two Feet
I can walk with two feet, two feet, two feet.

Big and round and fat
Open up the yellow envelope
Look, it’s a cat!

Something’s hiding in an envelope,
Can you guess? I can’t!
Open up the purple envelope
Look, it’s an ant!

Something’s hiding in an envelope,
Trying to dance a jig!
Open up the blue envelope
Look, it’s a pig!

Something’s hiding in an envelope,
Feeling rather shy
Open up the orange envelope
Look, it’s a butterfly!

Something’s hiding in an envelope,
It’s a big surprise!
Open up the pink envelope
I can’t believe my eyes!  It’s a…long letter!

H is for Halloween

Three great read-aloud books for Halloween!

Of course I have to include my favorite!

H is for House

I developed this storytime for an afternoon group of children 4-7 years old, featuring a Golden Sower book.  Golden Sower is the state Children's Choice Award for Nebraska.

Golden Sower Book:  Creaky Old House (Ashman)
Poem: Mouse House by Mary Ciotkowski from I invited a Dragon to Dinner (illustrated by Demarest)

I had several books selected for the 2nd book; so I could select a book appropriate to the age/attention span of the children present

Book:  Fix-it Duck (Alborough)

OR
Book: Jack's House (Beil)

OR
Book:  The Old House (Edwards)

Activity:  Design your own house.  I had a cut-out of a house, stapled it to a larger piece of paper so the house could "open".  I then folded the paper so it was behind the house, but then could be "opened" to show the whole house!

F is for Fall

An Outreach Storytime

Flannel Board:  Fall Riddles (Totline, July/Aug 2000, 12)

Beneath your feet you hear us crunch,
Then we get raked into a bunch.
What are we?  LEAVES

I drop off trees, and there I lie,
Till someone bakes me in a pie.
What am I?  AN APPLE

I stand in the field and scare a bird,
But I don't say a single word.
What am I?  A SCARECROW

I'm cold in autumn, if I blow,
I swirl the leaves and make a show.
What am I?  THE WIND

Of all the flowers, I am queen,
With yellow petals and seeds between.
What am I?  A SUNFLOWER

I'm big and orange and quite a catch,
When you pick me from the patch.
What am I?  A PUMPKIN

Book:  Little Bear's Big Sweater (Bedford)

Song:  A-C-O-R-N (tune: Bingo)
I made letters to hang from the flannel board, on the back of each letter is a picture showing hands clapping.  So as we sing the song I turn over a letter and we count how many "claps" we'll do.

There is a nut that squirrels like and acorn is it's name-o
A-C-O-R-N, A-C-O-R-N, A-C-O-R-N
And acorn is it's name-o.

Book:  The Busy Little Squirrel (Tafuri)

Action Song:  Autumn Leaves (tune: London Bridges)

Autumn leaves are falling down, falling down, falling down
Autumn leaves are falling down, Welcome Autumn.

Sweep the leaves and put them here, put them here, put them here
Sweep the leaves and put them here. Welcome Autumn!

Jump right in and have some fun, have some fun, have some fun
Jump right in and have some fun.  Welcome Autumn!

Book:  The little old lady who was not afraid of anything (Williams)
This is one of my all time favorite picture books!

C is for...

Every once in a while I remember "the perfect song" to start storytime with.  This one's a no-brainer
Music:  Sesame Street's "C is for Cookie"

Welcome Song

Henrietta’s Basket:  Box of crayons

Song: Be my echo (6 syllables x 2) candy cane and clown, corn and caterpillar

Sign Language: Letter C

Flannel Board: Birthday Candles
5 birthday candles, wish there were more

Blow one out, then there are four
4 birthday candles, pretty as can be
Blow one out, then there are 3
3 birthday candles, mother bought them new
Blow one out, then there are 2
2 birthday candles, birthday cakes are fun
Blow one out, then there is 1
1 birthday candle, a birthday wish is fun

Book: Little Mouse and the Big Cupcake (Taylor)
Song: Can You Find the color? - sung to London Bridges
Each child got an envelope with die cut shapes made with different colors.

Can you find the color red,
The color red, the color red?
Can you find the color red,
And hold it up in the air?

Substitute the names of other colors for red.

Nursery Rhyme: Jack be nimble

Book: The cow loves cookies (Wilson)

ABC Chant

Good bye Chant

Enrichment: crayons, counting candy corn, cars, dot-to-dot, cookie cutters and playdough, color car file folder game
