R is for...

[another detailed outline...for my sub]

Welcome Song
Welcome all to storytime
We will sing and we will rhyme.
Read a book and then we’ll play
Time for storytime, hip, hip, hurray!
Now we’ll sing our ABCs
We’ll do them all just wait and see.

A, B, C, D…. [point to letter with pointer while we sing]
Now I’ve sung my ABCs
Let’s start storytime, yes siree!

[Clues to guess, first clue is always “the letter of the day”]
Henrietta’s Basket: Rabbit (in magician's hat --puppet from Folkmanis)  This was fun because the kids and I told Henrietta that she had brought a HAT, not a rabbit!

[Give clues to the R words, then hold up word strips as they guess it.]
Teach the letter in sign language

Song:  Be my echo  (tune: Are you sleeping?)

Be my echo (be my echo)
R says /r/ (R says /r/) [hold hand to sign the letter]
Rattle and reindeer [hold up word strips—doesn’t matter what order]
Rhino and refrigerator
/r/, /r/, /r/ (/r/, /r/, /r/)  [hold hand to sign the letter]

Flannel Board:   Five Raindrops

1 little raindrop—drip, drip, drop
Hoped the rain would never stop
Thunder rumble, lightening flash
Another raindrop made a splash!

(repeat for 2, 3, 4, 5)

Book:  Little Rooster’s Diamond Button

Stand-up Song: Ring around the Rosy [three or four times]
[I learned a 2nd verse while I was visiting another storytime:
        Fishes in the ocean
        Fishes in the sea
        Let's jump up
        With a 1, 2, 3!]

Rhyme Time Song:
I’m so happy that you’ve come to storytime
Now listen very carefully to my rhyme
Stand up straight, and stomp your feet
Clap twice and take your seat
We’ll begin when I ring……
The rhyme chime….

[Say the nursery rhyme aloud after ringing the bell]

Nursery Rhyme: Mary had a little lamb
[Turn the easel around and point to the words while you repeat the rhyme again.  Talk about the pictures and any words they may not be familiar with.  Repeat the rhyme pointing to the words (if it’s a harder rhyme), the last time say “Grown-ups soft, kids loud”—point to the words as you help them repeat the rhyme]

Announcements:  Calendar, Swing into Reading

Book:  Little Rabbit (Henke)

ABC Chant  [hold chart and point to letters—use a “low” voice”]
A-B-CDE
F-G-HIJ
K-L-MNO
P-Q-RST
U-V-WXY
Now it’s time to say good-bye
Zzzzzzzzzz

Good bye Chant
See ya later, Alligator
Blow a kiss, Goldfish
Be sweet, Parakeet
Take care, Polar Bear
Give a hug, Ladybug
Toddle-loo, Kangaroo
See ya soon, Raccoon
Bye-bye, Butterfly
Out the door, Dinosaur!

Treasure Box Enrichment: ABC dot-to-dot, Rainbow colors coloring sheet, rock box (with magnifying glasses), rainbow bean bags, (rainbow) rice discovery bottles

[I colored rice with food coloring and a bit of rubbing alcohol.  After making several batches I mixed the colors together then put it in clean empty water bottles with the label removed.  I found 10 small things (paper clip, penny, bead, ribbon...) and put them in the bottle.  I had a card with the pictures of each of the items for the kids to find in the bottle (without opening the bottle!)  The kids had fun with it.]
