N is for Night Shivers

An Outreach Storytime

Book:  Creak! Said the Bed by Phyllis Root

Fingerplay:  I'm Not Afraid
from 2012 Summer Reading Program Manual

I'm not afraid of the night
When my mom turns off the light.
If I see shadows on the wall,
I am not afraid at all.
If there are strange noises that I hear,
I am brave.  I have no fear.
Cause monsters aren't real and I'm safe in bed
So I think happy thoughts instead.
At night, I do not cray or scream.
I climb in bed and dream good dreams.

Book:  The Great Monster Hunt

Song:  Monster, Monster
from 2012 Summer Reading Program Manual

Monster, monster turn around.
Monster, monster touch the ground.
Monster, monster reach up high.
Monster, monster blink your eyes.
Monster, monster show your teeth.
Monster, monster stamp your feet.
Monster, monster slap your knees.
Monster, monster sit down please.

M is for Magic

A Kindercare Storytime

Flannel Board:  Carl the Clown
My name boys and girls is Carl the Clown
I wear my hats all over town.
Each one has its own color name,
Which you can learn if you play my game.
Oh, here's a hat, and it is red (Santa hat)
it fits so nicely on my head.
Now when I wear my hat of yellow, (hard hat)
I'm told I'm quite a dandy fellow.
I hope you like my hat of blue (ball cap)
I'll put it on just for you.
I wear my white hat on a sunny day. (sombrero)
It looks quite nice my friends all say.
i put on my green hat to visit the park, (leprechaun)
But I take it off when it gets dark.
My purple hat is just as good, (clown)
I'd wear it always if I could.
My life would be oh so tragic
If I didn't have my black hat for magic!

The Magic Hat by Mem Fox

The Magic Rabbit by Annette LeBlane Cate

Have you ever seen a bunny
(tune: Have you ever seen a Lassie)
Have you ever seen a bunny, a bunny, a bunny
Have you ever seen a bunny that hops so slow?
He hops, and hops and hops and hops
Have you ever seen a bunny that hops so slow?

Additional verses:
Fast, Backward, On one foot

ABC Chant

Good bye Chant

Enrichment: ABC dot-to-dot, mitten match (from Oriental Trading), M&M sort and count.

M&M sort and count is one of my favorite early literacy activities! On a half sheet of paper I made 6 squares and typed in the color words. After I printed them I used the marker to underline the color word with its color. I use the "fun size" packages (which have about 15 candies in them). I give the kids 3 rules when I do this activity:

1. Sort the M&Ms by color
2. Count the number of M&Ms in each square
3. Ask the person who brought you today if you may eat them
To get parents involved instruct them to talk to their child about most, least, etc.
